Shenmue II :
So begins the trailer, as we glimpse a few of the dream sequences from part 1. With that familiar Shenmue orchestral theme playing in the background, we're then witness to footage of a boat coasting down a narrow stream, followed by Ryo running through various forest and mountainside scenes, and finally Ryo and Shenhua having a fireside chat. A bird swoops toward the camera, a waterfall in the distance, and an overlay tells us, "The story goes on."

The trailer is very short - somewhat of a tease, actually - and it unfortunately doesn't show Ryo walking around in Hong Kong. What's there is lovely, though. The forest and mountainside have amazing detail, zero pop-up, clean textures, and realistic shadows and lighting. There seem to be a few improvements in the character facial models, although as far as animation and textures are concerned, Ryo and Shenhua look pretty much the same, right down to the texture on Ryo's jacket.

We're beginning to think that the brief Shenmue II sequences included with the "What's Shenmue" demo tape released by Sega in early 1999 aren't too far off from what we'll be seeing when the sequel actually ships (see the bottom of this story for access to these videos). Will future videos show off the improvements to the Shenmue engine better? Will we get to see 50 characters on-screen (if this actually made the cut)?

We expect to find out shortly as Sega's hype machine begins anew. For now, take a look at the new trailer by downloading the clip below. We've also grabbed some screens, and these are also available below. Look for more on Shenmue II in the coming weeks.

RESIDENT EVEL : Zero
.The original Gamecube-only storyline of Resident Evil Zero will probably be its saving grace and that is not such a bad thing. The thing with RE games is that Capcom defined an entire genre with the series and so the control and mechanics almost have to remain the same for the sake of consistency. Even with the excellent Code Veronica on Dreamcast there was no doubt that you were playing a Resident Evil game. For RE0, it looks like the new storyline and a handful of twists in the game’s mechanics will be the driving force.

The E3 version we played seemed complete, but it was hard to tell because of our inability to advance deep into the adventure. We started out on a train as expected with Rebecca Chambers. The first thing we noticed was the lack of analog stick support. You use the D-pad to move and turn but the analog stick at this point is unused. Resident Evil 2 made use of the analog stick for controlling the character and this made the game significantly different from its PlayStation relatives. It wasn’t true analog control, but using the stick that we’re so familiar with made us much more comfortable sneaking around those creepy locations. It seems strange that analog stick control would be left out of the follow up to RE2.

The ability to do a quick 180-degree turn is a blessing that will probably save a lot of lives in this game. There’s nothing worse than having to wait hours while your character slowly pivots around while a bloodthirsty zombie is bearing down on you. With the 180 control, a precisely timed D-pad, A-button combination, you can flip around in no time to fill that undead slob with bullets. And this is especially helpful on a game that has you on a train, at least initially. The zombies seem to love to walk in the aisles and come at you from both directions at the same time. Since this is RE and not real life, Rebecca can’t slide into the seats for additional cover, but she can sure as hell whip around and pop a cap in both zombies in the blink of an eye.

We did not observe and FMV parts but that doesn’t mean they won’t be included in the game at some point. Nor did we observe some of the really cool features that should be included in RE0 like swapping characters or picking up and putting down weapons and equipment off of the ground. We gave it the best work out we could in the time that we had but we are fairly sure that fans of the Resident Evil series will be satisfied with this original Gamecube product
